Decoctions…..

A decoction is an herbal preparation made by simmering plant material in water until the water is reduced by half. A general rule for making decoctions is to use 1 ounce of plant material for each pint of water.

We make decoctions most often when working with hard plant materiel (i.e. roots, bark, seeds). Decoctions are a very effective way for extracting nutrients and other constituents from these plant parts. When we cook plant material (in this case by simmering it for about 20 minutes) we break down the cell walls and allow the constituents to move from the plant into the water.
